USPS

Attempted Delivery - Item being held, addressee being notified

USPS tracking parcel

What this status means

A USPS carrier tried to deliver the parcel but could not hand it over. The parcel was not left at the address. Instead it is being held, usually at the local post office, and USPS is notifying the addressee. The parcel is no longer on the delivery truck.

Is my package delayed?

This is an exception, not a routine step, but it is not a sign that the parcel is lost. A delivery attempt has failed, so the parcel will not arrive until the cause is resolved. The delay grows the longer the parcel sits unclaimed.

What happens next

  • USPS leaves or sends a notice that a delivery attempt was made.
  • The parcel is either redelivered or held for you to collect.
  • If it is not collected or redelivered within the holding period, it can be returned to the sender.

What you can do

  • Check your mailbox or door for a notice and follow its instructions, such as scheduling a redelivery or picking the parcel up.
  • If you collect it, bring the notice or tracking number and a photo ID.
  • Check that the delivery address on the order is correct and complete.
  • If you received no notice or cannot collect it, contact your local post office, or the seller, with your tracking number and order details ready.
