FedEx

Clearance delay - Import - Description provided is insufficient to classify commodity

FedEx tracking parcel

What this status means

The parcel has reached the destination country and is held at customs clearance. The goods description on the shipping paperwork is too vague for customs to assign a tariff category, for example "gift", "samples" or "clothing" without detail. FedEx cannot release it until a clearer description is supplied. The parcel is usually at a FedEx facility or with the customs authority.

Is my package delayed?

Yes, this is an exception. The parcel is paused until the description is fixed, so it will take longer than the previous steps. It is not lost or damaged. In most cases, about 57%, the next update is the import release, which means the problem was resolved. In about 8% of cases the parcel is returned to the sender.

What happens next

  • Most often, customs accepts the corrected information and FedEx shows "International shipment release - Import".
  • The parcel then continues to a local facility and out for delivery.
  • FedEx may ask you for broker or importer details.
  • If the description is never corrected, the parcel may be sent back to the shipper.

What you can do

  • Wait and keep checking the tracking history, as many cases clear without any action from you.
  • Contact the seller and ask them to send FedEx a more detailed description of the goods: what the item is, its material and its use.
  • If the tracking does not change for longer than usual, contact FedEx with your tracking number and order details.
  • Answer promptly if FedEx or a broker contacts you, and be ready to pay import duties or taxes if they apply.
