UPS

The package is at the clearing agency awaiting final release

UPS tracking parcel

What this status means

The parcel has reached the customs stage of its journey. It is with a clearing agency, a company that handles import paperwork and checks for UPS, and is waiting for final release. Once released, it can go back into UPS's normal network.

Is my package delayed?

This message by itself is normal for international parcels, not an exception. It only becomes a concern if the parcel stays here for longer than the previous steps took, or if the next update asks for duties or taxes that are not paid. Customs checks are a common cause of slower movement, but the message alone does not mean something is wrong.

What happens next

Most often the parcel is released and UPS scans it as arrived at a facility, which happened in about a quarter of cases. Other common next steps are a pickup scan or a departure scan. In about one case in eight, UPS reports that duties or taxes are due on the package, and it usually waits for that to be settled.

What you can do

  • Wait and keep checking the tracking history for a new scan.
  • If a duties or taxes notice appears, follow the payment instructions it gives, since the parcel may not move on until then.
  • If the status stays unchanged for longer than usual, contact UPS with your tracking number.
  • If UPS cannot help, ask the seller, with your order details ready, to check the customs paperwork.
