The Deutsche Post driver tried to hand over your parcel at the delivery address, but nobody answered or was able to accept it. The parcel is not lost. It was on the delivery vehicle, and after the failed attempt it went back with the driver. The recipient has been notified, usually by a card left in the letterbox or by an electronic message.
This message by itself is an exception, though a common and usually minor one. It means this delivery attempt did not work. Whether it becomes a real delay depends on what you do next and how soon the parcel reaches a pickup point or goes out again.
The most common next step is that the parcel is held ready for pick-up, either at a postal outlet or at a Paketshop. In about one fifth of cases the next message is already a successful delivery. Less often, the parcel is loaded onto a delivery vehicle for a new attempt.
