PostNL's courier tried to hand over the parcel and could not complete the delivery, for example because nobody answered the door or the parcel could not be left safely. The addressee has been notified, usually with a card or a message, that the parcel needs to be collected. The parcel is no longer on the delivery van. It is back with PostNL, at a local delivery office or sorting centre, or on its way to a pickup point.
This is an exception, but a common and usually minor one. It means the first delivery attempt did not work, not that the parcel is lost. The next steps vary: the parcel may be offered for delivery again, moved to a pickup point, or sent back to a sorting centre first. If the parcel stays on this status for longer than usual, it is worth checking.
