"Customs clearance exception" is a message from Aliexpress Standard Shipping, tracked through Cainiao. It means a customs check, either when the parcel leaves the origin country or when it arrives at the destination, did not go through smoothly. Customs may need more information, a document may be missing, or the parcel may be held for inspection. The parcel is usually at a customs facility or in a sorting centre near the border.
This is an exception, not a routine step. It does not always mean a serious problem, and many parcels carry on afterwards. Still, it can add delay, and a smaller share of parcels end up refused or destroyed after it.
Most often the parcel moves on to a departure message, such as "Leaving from departure country/region" (about a third of cases) or "Left from departure country/region" (about a fifth). Others reach a linehaul office or complete import customs clearance. Less often, the next update says the package may be for commercial use (about one in ten) or that it will be destroyed because customs clearance failed (about seven in a hundred).
